Roughly 15 birders joined today's trip to the hawkwatch at Curry Hammock. We started the trip earlier this year, and were well down the turnpike when the sun came up.
Our first stop was Old Settler's Park in Tavernier (mm 91.9, oceanside). Highlights included a Hooded Warbler, 2 Blue-winged Teal, a gray morph Eastern Screech-Owl, and a Swallow-tailed Kite spotted by Dick Cunningham (the official hawkwatchers saw at least 2 today).
From there, we headed straight down to Curry Hammock, arriving there about 9:30. Although the variety of hawks was good, numbers remained low throughout the morning. We saw up to 4 Peregrines perched in the same tree, as well as perched Merlins in other trees.
We ran into Larry Manfredi, and later Dennis Ollie and David Lysinger (all of whom were involved in the Keys Birding Festival).
We had an early lunch and took off for Ohio Key.
Ohio Key had a good variety of shorebirds and a white morph Reddish Egret. On the way down, we had noticed Bobolinks just before starting across the 7-mile bridge. On our way back, we stopped to get a good look at them. Some possible Roseate Terns were also seen from the 7-mile bridge.
A brief stop at the hawkwatch finally added Sharp-shinned Hawk. We then went to Anne's Beach, where we found 6 species of warbler, bringing our days total to 10. A brief stop at Dove Creek Hammock yielded no new birds, and we headed home, arriving at the Doc Thomas House at about 5:30.
