Green Cay was a delightful 62 degree sunny day on monday and birds abounded everywhere. Most were standard stuff but two stood out. The first was a Northern Harrier that buzzed the north side boardwalk with complete disregard to the tourists, photographers and GC docents. A beautiful creature that pounced on several frogs in the space of one hour.
At the first main chickee, by the owl next a hawk put on another display. A lively debate took place as watchers claimed cooper hawk and others claimed sharp shinned. Virtually every bird book and several "apps" were brought out for proof. Those that needed Sharp shinned for their life list insisted on it and weren't to be dissuaded. Several joggers and powere walkers were not pleased as the boardwalk was narrow and the camera angle tough without bending over. "Oh my gawd" they exclaimed "so much todo over a silly bird". The birders grew weary of citing the fact that Green Cay is a nature area not a jogger path.
So here is the bird. The tail is quite square lending credence to SS Hawk. Quite right?
