Highlights this morning, February 22, 2012 at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Collier County were FOTS Swallow-tailed Kites seen from the observation platform. A little late for Corkscrew but still nice to see a true harbinger of spring. However, THE best bird and Bird A Day bird has to be the Yellow-throated Vireo I found on the boardwalk. I actually relocated it later for some other visiting birde...rs. I see YTVI about once every other year down here in SW Florida so it was long overdue. I also had two male Wood Ducks just outside Corkscrew on CR846/Immokalee Rd. in a canal/ditch that still has water in it because the road and ditch run through a cypress dome. Other "expected" birds seen at CCS were Painted Bunting, Ovenbird, many singing Northern Parula, Black-and-white Warbler, Pine, Palm & Yellow-rumped Warbler, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Cattle Egret (uncommon at CCS), Blue-headed & White-eyed Vireo, Barred Owl, Great Crested Flycatcher, Tufted Titmouse, Pileated Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, all the expected waders and dare I say it, Wood Storks. Actually, there were more outside of CCS in the aforementioned ditch/canal than at CCS! A good morning of birding at CCS.
