Hey Audrey and Robin,

Beth and I had made plans last week to check out Sim-Chi and I was happy to see your posting this morning just before leaving for our day trip.

We arrived around 8:30 am to find a nice Krider's Red-tailed Hawk on a pole but only a dozen (or so) Red-winged Blackbirds along the road leading to the Sim-Chi facility and about 2 dozen Rock Doves on the silos and super-structures. We drove farther down the road hoping to see something but had no success other than a few Northern Harriers, American Kestrels, and Killdeer.

When we got back to the silos, there were hundreds of blackbirds sp. in the area (Red-winged, Brown-headed Cowbirds, Common Grackles, etc.) so we stopped to check/scope them out. Beth quickly got a female Yellow-headed Blackbird and then a second (photo attached). We did not get any males as Corey reports but we were happy with what we had.

The number of birds does not compare to that from last year (thousands and more) but it may still be too early in the season.

Rick
