Wednesday's walk attracted the greatest number of birders and birds this season. All 35 people walked from the Marsh Trail parking lot over to the Visitors Center to search for little birds. Our friendly 1st winter female Black-throated Green Warbler was more than happy to pose as was a cute little Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Our first of season White-eyed Vireo joined the ongoing Blue-headed Vireo. Woodpeckers in this area included Downy, Red-bellied, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Pileated.
The group then split in two with each going in the opposite direction around the C-6 impoundment. The Live Oaks and Cypresses along Lee Road added Black-and-white, Orange-crowned, Palm, Pine, Yellow-rumped and Prairie Warblers, as well as Common Yellowthroat and Northern Parula. Meanwhile two (or three) large flocks of American Robins flew overhead followed later by a flock of Cedar Waxwings. (Well, actually, the Robins were flying South while the Waxwings were flying North. Which one is confused?!)
The high water level in C-6 has resulted in fewer shore birds but there were some Wilson's Snipe still hangin' in there.
The expected waders were joined by raptors in the Marsh Trail area including: Black and Turkey Vultures, Osprey, Snail Kite (adult male), Northern Harrier, Red-shouldered Hawk, and American Kestrel.
After most of the group had left, a Short-tailed Hawk (dark morph) soared overhead to end a very pleasant and productive morning walk.
