Last night (1/29) David La Puma, Bryant Roberts and I staked out this owl, and this time David got a scope on it and confirmed that it is indeed a barn owl, after all. I have seen short-eareds flying in the daytime, like Maria noted, but it's been a couple years. My bad!
While waiting for it to get dark enough for the owl to come out, we were serenaded by the insect-like twittering of dozens of grasshopper sparrows in some evening chorus.
