I didn t expect much at John U. Lloyd Beach State Park this afternoon since the winds
weren t that strong and mostly out of the north but I was pleasantly surprised. Between
3:30 and 5:35 I saw about twenty Shearwaters working south well offshore, five were close
enough to call Cory s Shearwaters. Also in the distance were about five gannet-like birds
which may have been immature Gannets but all I can say is that they looked like Sulids. A
couple of Jaegers passed by closer to shore but to far out to identify. The usual half dozen
or so Magnificent Frigatebirds were in the area. There were plenty of Laughing Gulls
around but there were fewer larger gulls around than usual, four first year Herring Gulls
and one adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. Lloyd closed when we went on hurricane
warning and along with Birch will most likely be closed through at least tomorrow.
