Today (February 14, 2012), Pat Hayes, Paula Bartlett, and I observed the La Sagra's Flycatcher several times between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM at Dagny Johnson State Park, The bird appeared to be moving with a flock of vireos, warblers, and 3+ Great Crested Flycatchers. When we would find this group of birds we were able to get views of the flycatcher. We first found them on the trail that goes to the right from the shelter. At first they were about 150 yards down the trail. Next was at the first "Area closed..." sign along the trail but closer to the shelter, and finally along the paved walkway about 75 yards in from the highway.
The vireos included White-eyed and Blue-headed. One of the White-eyed Vireos had a song very similar to that of a Thick-billed Vireo but was clearly a White-eyed Vireo. The warblers included Ovenbird, Northern Parula, Black-and-white Warbler, Palm Warbler, Prairie Warbler, and Worm-eating Warbler. We also observed numerous Northern Cardinals and a White-crowned Pigeon in the area. A couple from California who had seen the flycatcher before we arrived, also reported seeing a Black-throated Green Warbler.
