Birding Around Palm Beach County

I spent this cold and windy day birding in Palm Beach County; my first birds as I entered the county were two Roseate Spoonbills flying south over Holeyland Road at US 27. At Campbell Day Use Area at STA3/4, I could only find five species of waterfowl: Mottled Duck, Blue and Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintail and Ring-necked Duck. A single Purple Swamphen, a flock of Black-necked Stilts and a few distant American White Pelicans were the only other species of note.

I next visited South Bay RV Campground, where a Western Spindalis was reported on 2/7. I was told at the entrance station that a day pass to enter the campground would cost $10.00. Considering that the windy conditions would make finding this bird unlikely, I decided to spend my $10.00 elsewhere. The webmaster has added the fee information to the directions to the campground on the TAS weekly rare bird update.

My next stop was the Sem Chi rice plant off SR 880 (4 miles west of the intersection with US 441/SR 80/Southern Blvd.), where among the many blackbirds and cowbirds feeding in the back of the plant, I picked out two female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS. Next, I stopped at Wellington Preserve, where I added Lesser Scaup, Bald Eagle, Snail Kite, Limpkin and Forster's and Caspian Tern to my day list.

I ended my journey with quick stops at both Green Cay and Wakodahatchee Wetlands. At Green Cay, I added Sora and Purple Gallinule to my day list. At Wakodahetchee, I identified at least two of the continuing NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS.
