My portion of the North American Migration count started shortly before sunrise in West Kendall. I started at a Boat-tailed Grackle. By the time I left, I had found well over 2000 BT Grackles. In fact, those Grackles accounted for a majority of the birds I saw on the count. A drive through the Kendall-Tamiami Airport produced Burrowing Owls and Eastern Meadowlarks. I then headed down the turnpike to Florida City, and Card Sound to the Monroe county line (see next post), completing the Miami-Dade portion of my count. Totals for Miami-Dade were:
42 Muscovy Duck
3 Mallard (domestic ancestry)
3 Great Egret
29 Cattle Egret
2 Green Heron
36 White Ibis
1 Osprey
1 American Coot
2 Killdeer
1 Spotted Sandpiper
3 Laughing Gull
22 Rock Pigeon
29 Eurasian Collared-Dove
46 Mourning Dove
9 Burrowing Owl
3 Red-bellied Woodpecker
1 Northern Flicker
4 Gray Kingbird
9 Loggerhead Shrike
5 Blue Jay
5 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
12 Northern Mockingbird
175 European Starling
1 Black-throated Blue Warbler
3 Yellow-throated Warbler
1 Ovenbird
6 Northern Cardinal
43 Eastern Meadowlark
2204 Boat-tailed Grackle
That made 29 species and 2701 individuals.
