With overcast and threatening skies, our group of 28 birders split into two groups -- one going clockwise and the other counter-clockwise around the C-6 impoundment. While jokingly making bets about which group would get more birds, it was really quite friendly and each made out quite nicely.

Raptors, between the two groups, included: Northern Harrier, Snail Kite, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, and Peregrine Falcon.

Shore birds were few and far between as the water levels are pretty high (though the levels will probably be brought down for Everglades Day this weekend): Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs, and Wilson's Snipe.

Again, unfortunately, no owls and no Louisiana Waterthrush though we know they're still there.

As my group was nearing the end of the first leg of the route back to the Marsh Trail parking lot, I said "today's list isn't going to be all that great". But little did I know.

With both groups now together again, the Live Oaks in the parking lot erupted with little birds -- not unlike a few weeks ago -- and everyone was excited about our sightings: Northern Parula, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Black-throated Green Warbler (1st winter female) -- pictured here.

We got no rain, the sun emerged, the temperature was quite nice, and the groups were still talking to each other. Quite a nice day, all-in-all!
