As pointed out by Larry (and mentioned by Brian), the bird I photographed is actually an Eastern Wood-Pewee. This explains the long wings. I think the call it's been giving is probably the "plit" call mentioned by Sibley (but apparently nowhere else, even on tape). I can't say I'm familiar with this call, although I have a vague recollection of hearing it before.
I think the overall lightness of the bird and relatively strong wing bars contributed to the confusion...together with wishful thinking!
