We had a much more manageable crowd on Wednesday -- 22 birders. And a pretty decent variety of birds as well -- 58 species.

Warblers included: Black-and-white, Orange-crowned, Common Yellowthroat, Northern Parula, Palm, Pine, Yellow-rumped, and Prairie. Also thrown in were Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. We dipped on the female/juvenile Black-throated Green that was there on Tuesday (but Tom said that it had been hanging around for many weeks now, so maybe next week's group will get a sighting.) And, speaking of dipping, no owls today. :(

We had only one lonely Wood Duck in the same area as last week (north of the line of cypresses just before the boat launch parking area). But there were plenty of Blue- and Green-winged Teals in C-6 along many Wilson's Snipe, a few Lesser Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers and the standard waders (though the Roseate Spoonbills must have packed up and left as they haven't been seen for a couple of weeks now).

A pair of Nanday Parakeets were on the wires next to the pole at the bus parking area just as they were on Tuesday. Jan mentioned that two years ago a pair kicked the Pileated Woodpeckers out of their nest cavity on that very pole. Whether these guys will do the same remains to be seen. (Maybe they already have.)

We checked out the pond behind the Visitors Center for the Louisiana Waterthrush but could only come up with a Green Heron. That is until after the group broke up to leave and Beth and I went back to give it the Olde College Try. And our efforts were rewarded! The little guy had been hiding under a log the whole time and must not have seen us chatting. He only made a brief appearance before flying off to the far end of the pond but long enough for us to get a positive ID.
