Since no one showed up this morning for the TAS field trip to Corkscrew Sanctuary and Ft. Myers Beach (curse you, Ivan!), I decided to head up to the Belle Glade sod farms on US 27, in search of the Hudsonian Godwits. Brian Hope and Steve Riddle were there when I arrived (about 7:30 AM), but the Godwits were no where to be found. Only after Brian and Steve left, and John Boyd and Nancy Freedman arrived did a single godwit decide to make an appearance. It was first spotted in the northern-most field, on a dirt mound alongside the second irrigation ditch out. Due to poor light conditions at this time of day, it was seen mostly in silhouette, but when it turned just right, you could see the upturned bill. Definitely a "better view desired" type of sighting. It would periodically disappear into the ditch, which is where it was when Kevin Sarsfield and Juan Villamil arrived to try to get another look at their fantastic discovery.
Other birds seen at this location:
Fulvous Whistling Duck (with chicks)
Upland Sandpiper
Pectoral Sandpiper
Dowitcher sp.
Semipalmated Plover
Black-bellied Plover
Killdeeer
Black-necked Stilt
Bobolink (flyovers)
Stilt Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, and Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs were added at a flooded field on CR 827, west of US 27.
