Between 11:30-12:30pm (good low tide)I also observed the American Golden Plover plus an incredible display of coastal birds on the Crandon flats - 3 seperate flocks of Common Terns came in totally 65 birds, over 300 Royal Terns, 125 Sandwich Terns, and 3 Forster Terns. We also counted 35 Piping ploves, 125 Semi-palmated plovers, 85 Black-bellied plovers, and 6 Wilsons. On the upper beach (north), a mixed groups of Short-billed Dowitchers (6), Least Sandpipers, Sanderlings, Ruddy Turnstones (14), Willets (3), Brown Pelicans(16), and gulls (including 1 Herring (1st winter). On Osprey Trail, Eastern Kingbirds, Ospreys (5), were observed. In the hammock a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Ovenbirds, and Worm-eating warblers were present. A Mangrove cuckoo was seen off the boardwalk to the rock reef. I list these species and their numbers to emphasize the importance of Crandon Park's resource areas as vital habitats for migratory birds. On a side note, 20 Ovenbirds were observed at Arch Creek Park (10am 9/9). We are compiling your bird reports from county parks to help us better manage park resources for migratory birds. Thanks for your input.
: An American Golden-Plover was on south end of Crandon Beach at 1 PM. It's in basic plumage, but has the "classic" field marks for the species. It stays separate from a flock of 10 Black-bellied Plovers. An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull has been here since Sunday, but nothing else unusual (like Hudsonian Godwits!)is around.
