Yesterday birded several spots in S. Dade with a "beginner birder". Started at the Sparrow Fields. Wanted to see the Orchard Oriole and Vesper Sparrows reported. Saw neither. Some of the birds seen were Northern Harrier, Kestrel, Merlin, C. Ground-Doves, E. Phoebe, Loggerhead Shrike, Palm Warblers, Common Yellowthroat. There were some Black Vultures feeding by the entrance on what was either an Anhinga or another vulture.
Later headed to Chekika. Some highlights were Glossy Ibis, more Harriers, noisy Red-shouldered Hawks mating, many Killdeer in the parking lot, E. Phoebe, Tree Swallows, BG Gnatcatcher, Palm Warbler and E. Meadowlarks. Cardinals and White-eyed Vireos were in full song but I didn't see them.
Later swung by Cutler Wetlands, which was pretty uneventful, and had Mottled Duck, Green-winged and Blue-winged Teals, Greater Yellowlegs and Killdeer. From there went to Black Point Marina where we saw Red-breasted Merganser (1), Horned Grebe (3), Ruddy Turnstone flock, Spotted Sandpiper, Royal Tern, Belted Kingfisher, Great Crested Flycatcher, BG Gnatcatcher and Prairie Warbler. Ended my birding near home as I swung by Indian Hammocks where I added RT Hummingbird, Blue-headed Vireo and Yellow-rumped and Prairie Warblers. Also witnessed a Cooper's Hawk miss a Rock Pigeon near home.
