Ten birders enjoyed a very special day. Before arriving at Wakodahatchee, John Boyd and I had 3 Brown Pelicans fly over us on the turnpike heading west, 1 in Broward and 2 in Palm Beach. Most of the TAS birders were already inside looking at the "Wurdemann's" along with a huge group of photographers. They informed us we missed the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks which had been flying around. We had 3 Purple Gallinules at the entrance, along with the usual Black-crowned Night Herons, Pied-billed Grebes, Common Gallinules, etc. On the back side we had TWO Virginia Rails chasing each other along with two Soras, and a fly-over of 2 Nandy Conures. There is also a Great Blue named "George" who has a hole in his throat but is feeding and breeding just fine. Warblers were scarce, mostly Myrtles and Palms. At Green Cay we had a fly-over Baltimore Oriole and our first Martins. There were Blue-winged Teal and Mottled Ducks, a field of female Red-winged Blackbirds occasionally harassed by a Red-shouldered Hawk; two sparring Soras and a female Harrier feasting on a Coot. We kept adding more Soras to the list. And then there was the LEAST BITTERN and another VIRGINIA RAIL. We only saw one Marsh Rabbit. No Painted Buntings. At Wellington, there were at least 15 Limpkins, lots of Savannah Sparrows, Ring-necked Ducks, Lesser Scaup and an up-close female SNAIL KITE. From the top of the tower we scoped a group of ducks which included Shovelers, American Wigeons, a couple of PIN TAILS and a White Pelican. Sandhill Cranes were heard in the distance. On the long walk back to the cars, a Towhee was heard, there were Ground Doves, a House Wren, Killdeer, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Greater Yellowlegs.
