Dr. Douglas E. Gill, Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland Department of Biology, has requested the assistance of the Florida birding community to report to him any sightings of banded Grasshopper Sparrows that are wintering in the state or elsewhere within their wintering range. The birds were banded at the Chester River Field Research Center in Maryland; over 4,000 birds have been banded to date. Nestlings and fledglings have an aluminum FWS band on their left leg, while adults have a plastic color band above the FWS band on their left leg and two plastic color bands on their right leg. If you see a banded Grasshopper Sparrow, contact Dan Small at dsmall2@washcoll.edu or Dr. Gill at dgill@umd.edu; be sure to include the date and location of the sighting as well as the color and position of the bands.
