Drove Research Rd early but had no birds calling. One owl flew by fast in the pines, but I could not get on it. A dawn broke, there was not much of note seen, either. However, luck changed on Hidden Lake Rd, where a Brown-crested Flycatcher was calling repeatedly, about halfway between the T with Research Rd and Hidden Lake.
The best birds at Royal Palm were all calling at about 0700. A King Rail was close to the buildings, and an American Bittern did its oompa-loompa call. Best of all was the call note of an American Robin, which became 4 Robins when they took off from alongside the paved trail. Its been at least 2 years since I've seen any Robins in South Florida....
At Aerojet Rd we FINALLY found the Ash-throated Flycatcher, and watched surrounded by feral dogs behind us, birding tour vans next to us, and Swainson's and Short-tailed hawks overhead. Vermilion Flycatchers were in the usual spots.
On the way home I drove through the Redlands, and saw a small flock of Cedar Waxwings overhead at app. 240 St & 172d Ave.
