On Saturday, Aug. 28, I found a scat on Research Road that almost surely came from a black bear. Its very large size rules out pretty much everything but bear and panther, and the fact that it was full of palm seeds pretty much eliminates the latter. (No, it wasn't gator poop.) This was about a quarter mile east of the research buildings, where the road runs through an open marshy area. I won't post a photo, as that would just be gross.
Also out there were flocks of Eastern Kingbirds almost everywhere you looked, along with nice six-point whitetail buck near the old missle site (or whatever that thing is).
Of course, the mosquitoes and deerflies were so thick they were having in-air collisions, even in the bright sunlight. A horsefly that landed on my fender was so huge it almost rocked the truck. Does anyone know what species those big black bombers are?; the Everglades ones seem larger than any I've seen elsewhere.
