Crandon Beach has hosted Lesser Black-backed Gulls the past 3 summers. Using the strict June/July summer time frame, my records are as follows:
6/12/02 through 7/31/02: consistent sightings of 2-11 birds on 6/23. The usual number observed was 7-9.
6/1/03 through 7/31/03: consistent sightings of 1-3 birds, with adults seen 6/30 and 7/3.
6/12/04 through 7/26/04: consistent sightings of 1-3 birds.
Other than the adult mentioned above, the gulls have been immatures, mostly 1st-summer.
Also of interest: Great Black-backed Gull was present 6/10/04 through 7/26, with 4 birds present on 7/22. This was a day with large influx of shorebirds.
Lesser Black-backed Gull was also observed 7/8/98 on Tigertail Beach.
This information is transferred each summer to John Boyd (regional compiler) and is printed in the appropriate Florida Field Naturalist. We're very lucky to have these neat gulls summer here.
