Alex Harper and I birded the Sparrow Fields first thing this morning. At dawn, we had two Barn Owls patrolling the fields, which were subsequently replaced by about half a dozen Northern Harriers. Sparrow numbers and diversity was pretty good, with multiple Lincoln's, Swamp, Savannah, Grasshopper, and White-crowned Sparrows being seen right along the first and second sections of the dike. We also had a single Clay-colored Sparrow. White-tailed Kite was also seen, harrying a Northern Harrier.
Onwards to the Chekika Unit of Everglades National Park, we had a calling Least Flycatcher in the willows near the boardwalk. Alex also spotted a Wilson's Warbler that was previously reported, which was working the hammock edge along with the usual winter assortment of this area such as Yellow-rumped Warbler, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and White-eyed Vireo. As we were heading out, briefly checking the soaring raptors yielded a dark morph Short-tailed Hawk and an adult Snail Kite.
It was a great, cold, and crisp morning to be birding!
