I observed at least 20 adult bald eagles on Saturday, Aug 21, at about 1 pm, in a large plowed field in the East Everglades. A friend of mine stated that she had seen 10 on Friday so I had to go and see for myself. A check on the same field later that same Saturday revealed only a few, but some where still there. I have seen them there in past years, but never that many together. It was an incredible sight.
The fields are somewhat out of the way, but they would be located in the area Northeast of the intersection SW 216 St and SW 232 Ave. However, the ONLY way in and out is by SW 168 St off Krome.
Go west of Krome on SW 168 st like you were going to the old Chekika park. Turn left on SW 237 Ave. Follow that old, nearly abandoned, road for about 4 miles, until you must take a sharp turn left (east) onto SW 216 St. Go about 1/2 mile to the intersection of SW 216 and 232 Ave (there will be a yellow SFWMD gate on the south side). The pavement ends here. Continue east another 1/2 to 1 mile. The fields in reference will be on the north side. As luck would have it the birds were mostly at the far north end of this field, but I spoke to the farmer there and he let me drive north on his dirt road a bit for a better look. Due to the mud a 4x4 is recommended, otherwise its not that far to walk.
