OK, Larry & Toe. Better?

Larry Manfredi did the Coastal Prairie Trail portion of the Coot Bay CBC this morning, and although we both were on tight schedules, we did manage some good birds. At the cotton pickers camp we got a few warblers including Yellow-breasted Chat, painted bunting, american goldfinches, and 3 Least Flycatchers! I think this is the first time I see 3 in one spot. At one point they all started calling back and forth.

On the prairie, we quickly got into the sharp-tailed sparrows, and this year the Saltmarsh outnumbered the Nelson's 3:1. While walking along the prairie we flushed a Short-eared Owl. We later flushed it 3 times, although not deliberately. It kept landing where we had to walk through. We also had a Pine Warlber, a species I didn't expect in buttonwoods, 2 Barn Swallows, and a Northern Rough-winged Swallow. House and Sedge Wrens were around in small numbers. I haven't tallied up all the birds, but by my rough notes we got 55 species. Not a bad way to end 2011.

Happy New Years!
