This morning, from 8 to 11 a.m., Saturday, August 21, 2004, I did a little fall migration birding at A.D. Barnes Park. Fall migrants included: Prairie,Yellow-throated Warblers, Northern Parula,Ovenbird, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Barn Swallow. An Eastern Red-tailed Hawk, Chestnut-fronted Macaw,Yellow-chevroned Parakeets,White-winged Dove,(12) Hill Mynas and Great-crested Flycatcher were also seen.
Life is good........knowing that the Sod Farm field trip is loomin' on the horizon, next Saturday, August 28th.
Meet at the US 27 entrance to the Holeyland/Rotenberger W.M.A. on the Broward/Palm Beach County line at 7:00 a.m. if you choose not to carpool from the Doc Thomas House, which is leaving at 6:00 a.m. sharp. Brian Rapoza will post as to when we will be arriving at STA-5 at the end of Bloomberg Rd. to meet the naturalist from SFWMD if you are coming from points further north. Remember, you must make a reservation with Tropical Audubon Society in order to participate in birding this normally off limits area.
We have 27 people signed up, at last count, and my van is full, so plan on carpooling if you are not taking your own vehicle. The less cars the better! Many dirt roads will be traversed on this field trip, so save yourself the trouble of getting a carwash this week. Most of the dirt roads are in pretty good shape for most any size vehicle excepy maybe a Mini-Cooper.
This trip holds great promise for turning up some specialty species but is not for the faint of heart. Bring bug repellant, sun screen and plenty of water. If you have two-way radios they will come in handy. We will be stopping for lunch, but bring snacks to tide you over.Look forward to seeing y'all on our first field trip of the fall.
