There was more of everything this week -- more birds and more birders. Despite it being quite chilly and breezy, there were many species of small birds out early: 2 flycatchers (Eastern Phoebe and Great Crested), 2 vireos (White-eyed and Blue-headed), 2 swallows (Tree and Northern Rough-winged), 4 warblers (Palm, Prairie, Pine, and Yellow-Rumped), and 4 woodpeckers (Red-bellied, Yellow-bellied, Downy, and Pileated). (Yeh, I know -- woodpeckers aren't that small.)
The C6 impoundment continues to host many wading and shore birds including hundreds of White and Glossy Ibises (before most left for a round of golf), a half dozen Roseate Spoonbills, numerous herons and egrets, and both Blue-winged and Green-winged Teals. While the Solitaries seem to have moved on, the Least Sandpipers and Wilson's Snipe are still hanging around.
The best news of the day was Larry's sighting of the Great Horned Owl. He heard two separate calls (one near the area where we saw the bird last year; the other from deep behind the Visitors Center area) and saw the former in the light of dawn. Hopefully we'll see them nest this year, unlike last.
Happy New Year to all.
Rick
