I decided to do some birding in south Dade this afternoon. The fields at the intersection of the Ingraham highway and SW 217th Ave. have been plowed and were unproductive. Swallow-tailed Kites soared overhead at the Research Rd stop sign. There was a 2nd year Reddish Egret on Research Rd near the research center (just starting to get its adult colors). I got a Solitary Sandpiper a bit earlier on Research Rd. Finally, a Whimbrel flew around Dump Marsh. I had hoped for Black Tern there, but will settle for the Whimbrel, my first for Dade county.
