Have you read Florida Bird Life by Art Howell, 1932? Many similar accounts like the one you pointed out. I especially found it interesting when it referenced Bachman's Warbler as abundant in the middle keys, and how someone collected 47 in one season. Gee, could the collected have contributed to its going extinct?

As for Lesser Scaup, just a couple years ago I saw 500,000 near Port Canaveral while participating in the Cocoa CBC, so there are still birds somewhere. Do they still make it to South Florida? Maybe not. In just my few years of birding, I have noticed a northward movement of some species, with Hermit Thrush coming to mind. I would find this one easy during winter down here, but the last few years they seem to be somewhat uncommon. I think someone mentioned literature about this. Anyonw out there know about this?

Question is, do we have fewer birds in the last 100 years, or have their patterns changed, or both?
