Although "common" in SE Florida in places like Miami, Homestead, Florida City and parts of the Florida Keys, Common Mynas are rare here in SW Florida, especially Collier County. Prior to today, I had only seen one in SW FL in Lee County back in the mid-90's. Since April, I had seen reports and heard rumors of up to four Common Mynas being seen and sometimes photographed from the Oasis Visitor's Center in the Big Cypress National Preserve on the southeast end to East Naples on the northwest end of the reports, but despite my best efforts, I was never able to see these birds myself. This morning that changed. I received a call from NH native Steve Pitcher, a volunteer at the Big Cypress National Preserve Headquarters. Two Common Mynas were being seen at the Subway at the intersection of SR29 and US41 in Carnestown. Within an hour, I was at this location but I failed to find the mynas there. However, across SR29 at the Everglades City Visitors Welcome Center (A-frame), the two Common Mynas were picking bugs from the undercarriages of parked cars. I talked with the woman who works at the Welcome Center and she told me the Common Mynas had been there for over three months. Common Myna is #230 for my Collier County Big Year and it is also a new species for Collier County for me. Thanks Steve!
