This is my annual duck weekend to North Florida, and I thought that the Jan TAS trip might like to know about St.Marks. The operative word here is "dry". I thought it was tidal variation, but a ranger said no. Apparently there has been a drought. Lighthouse pool is 1/3 mudflat, to the delight of shorebirds, but the diving ducks usually there are decreased in number. A Snowy Egret in a deep part had an inch of belly room. I saw a Canvasback tip up! The usual species are there, Buffleheads galore and the Cinnamon Teal remains, but numbers are down. Coots are hard to find! The heliport has dried up and is now a meadow. But the refuge is as beautiful as ever. I hope they get some heavy rain in the next couple of weeks.
