The C6 impoundment remained the center of attention this week with three dozen Wood Storks; half a dozen Roseate Spoonbills; at least three Solitary Sandpipers; dozens of Wilson's Snipe and Least Sandpipers; both Blue- and Green-winged Teals; Mottled Ducks; Great, Snowy, and Cattle Egrets; and Little Blue and Tricolored Herons. There were five immature Little Blues hanging together with two adults leading us to question whether they were a family.
The Wood Storks and Spoonbills flew off shortly before the walk began. But the Spoonbills returned later in the morning and a large kettle of Wood Storks formed shortly thereafter which may likely have been the same ones.
The Snipe and Least Sandpipers remained from last week as did the Solitary Sandpipers (though we counted three this week -- up from two from last week).
A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks appeared to be setting up a nest near the pavilion but this is in the same area where they did the same thing last year only to abandon it later. (The unused nest further south on the Marsh Trail is in worse shape than last year.)
The Eastern Screech-Owl didn't make an appearance today but Larry-the-Owl-Man thinks he heard a Great Horned Owl before dawn. Unfortunately we never found it.
Today's photo is of a Yellow-throated Warbler that appeared, disappeared, and returned to a bush along the path on the south side of the C6 impoundment. He was quite handsome!
Oh, by the way, we were happy to have the people who reported the Horned Grebe at the Wellington Environmental Preserve join us today. Thank you Lee, Dave, and John!
