A high school friend and I headed up to the South Bay area this afternoon in search of Florida Kingsnakes, which are abundant in the sugar cane fields of western Palm Beach County. During cold snaps, the snakes are very reliable along irrigation ditches, especially in the morning. Despite the time of day and the weather, we attempted anyway.

In between I-75 and South Bay, we had many Northern Harriers, Wilson's Snipe, and Savannah Sparrows. A Crested Caracara and several Northern Rough-winged Swallows were along Mutt Thomas Road, which is just south of US-27 and east of Clewison.

Our last stop was the STA access point several miles down Holey Land Road. We parked beside the bridge, crossed, and walked north down the gravel trail. There are impoindments on either side. Here we had Blue-winged Teal, Ring-necked Ducks, American Bittern, six Purple Swamphens, calling King Rails, Roseate Spoonbills and a Solitary Sandpiper.

Snake species included two Brahminy Blind Snakes, Eastern Garter Snakes, Peninsula Ribbon Snakes, and a Florida Banded Water Snake. American Alligators were numerous.
