There were 10,000 shorebirds in the first impoundment approaching the Marsh Trail parking lot (C6) Wednesday morning. (Well, maybe not 10,000 but there were plenty!) Al counted 53 Wilson's Snipe(s) through his scope. They were accompanied by too many Least Sandpipers to see and count (if only a Cooper's had flown over so we could actually see how many there were) along with some Solitary Sandpipers (two pictured here).
Green-winged seemed to outnumber Blue-winged Teals today with one really spectacularly colored adult male (not the one linked to in the photos). And there was quite a variety of Warblers behind the Visitor's Center. The Eastern Screech Owl was napping and not showing off.
When we got to the area by the observation tower (SE corner of C7), Beth spotted two raptors perched on the automated sensor poles near the LILA project. One appeared (at long distance) to be a Red-shouldered Hawk but the other could well have been a Snail Kite. Unfortunately, the lighting was awful and before we could get to a better viewing position it flew off.
At that same time a kettle of Turkey and Black Vultures was passing directly overhead including at least five raptors. One was identified as a Light-morph Short-tailed and others as juvenile Broad-winged Hawks. (Why can't I take my eyes off the binoculars and take confirming photos?)
All-in-all it was a very productive day spent with 10 friendly birders.
