Carlos noted below an all too familiar event: the disappearing of resident birds in winter. In many areas of South Florida I have taken note that long about the middle of December the blue jays just disappear. At my home of youth (now Sea Ranch Lakes-used to be to be all woods) the bluejays would just not be there until mid January. Then they all returned. Here in Coral Springs and at Hoechoka Hammock the number of Blue jays drops about 90%. They also return about mid-January. Feeder stations are barely touched and seed consumption drops significantly. They just go somewhere.....maybe a bluejay convention in the keys?

'Tis a puzzlement.
