I believe a combination of factors occurs in winter as to why fewer birds are seen at around this time of year. First of all, they disperse further from their breeding territories and feed more widely. Second of all, they are much less vocal in the winter which makes them less easy to detect.

The birds I follow at the University of Miami campus seem to be faithful to the general area even in winter, but they do seem to disappear for periods of up to several weeks.
