A brief mid-afternoon stop at the North Naples Waste Water Treatment Plant here in Collier County found over 160 Hooded Mergansers, 13 Northern Shovelers and 4 Ring-necked Ducks. The two Red-breasted Mergansers (rare inland in Collier County) seen a few days ago had departed for places unknown. Oddly, no shorebirds were seen, not even Killdeer or Spotted Sandpipers, both of which are almost a "given" at this time of the year. Other birds seen included all of the usual waders plus Double-crested Cormorant, Anhinga, Osprey, Turkey Vulture, Palm Warbler and Mourning Dove.
