I went with David LP on an all-day Jan 1 southwest Florida birding extravaganza...gotta get that new year list started!
We went down Tamiami trail and through Fakkahatchee Strand and ended at Corkscrew Swamp. Some highlights:

Ruby-crowned kinglet(Fakk)
Thousands of American Robins (Corkscrew)
Crested Caracara (on road between Corkscrew and Rte 29)
American Goldfinch flyovers (Corkscrew)
Lots of the herons, ibis & storks-Shark Valley is beginning to rock!
Copulating Viceroy butterflies & red-shouldered hawks (not with each other, of course)
Close-up extended observation of black vultures picking an opossum's brain out through it's ear (Fakk)
About 11 species of warblers; the usual stuff. We couldn't find an orange-crowned anywhere!
..and lots of other stuff that is standard wintertime fare for places more north of here, like several sapsuckers and blue-headed vireos and tufted titmice.

Did I forget anything, David?

Happy 2002, all!
Michelle
