I spent part of the afternoon and the early evening counting exotic species in Miami Shores. Most of the birds were observed from the Miami Shores Country Club golf course.
I was surprised by the high numbers of White-winged Parakeets and Chestnut-fronted Macaws. All birds were seen at the golf course unless noted otherwise.
1:10-2:30
2 Egyptian Geese
85 White-winged Parakeets
10 Yellow-chevroned Parakeets
13 Monk Parakeets
1 Blue-crowned Parakeets- intersection of 94th street and North Miami Avenue
8 Chestnut-fronted Macaws
The White-winged and Yellow-chevroned Parakeets were staging in ficus trees along the canal in the golf course. A great vantage point to see these birds, and especially the macaws, is from the small walking bridge that crosses the canal on the northern perimeter of the golf course. One might be able to head east on NE 107th from NE 6th Avenue in Miami Shores, but there may be no parking due to the school. Approaching the bridge from the east in Biscayne Park, there might be more available areas to pull off the road. This area is a bit confusing, so "google map" the area so that navigating around the canal is easier to visualize, as crossing the canal by vehicle requires driving several blocks north.
4:20- night fall
2 Egyptian Geese
2 White-winged Parakeets
53 Chestnut-fronted Macaws (one flock contained 24)
2 Orange-winged Parrots
The macaws and parrots were flying from north to south an hour before sunset, following the canal. They roost towards Miami Beach, I suspect.
I could not pull out a Spot-breasted Oriole, despite several miles of walking areas that have historically produce several pairs.
Other species seen included a light and dark morph Short-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawk, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Northern Parula, Prairie, Black-and-white, and Palm Warbler, and Painted Buntings.
