That really is strange, I had 8 in the City furniture wetland just riding a bicycle by last week. I don't think I've ever failed to see them at the north end of that wetland. The canal is no good for some reason, but all those other small wetlands have held Swamp Hens off and on.
Just out of curiosity, I'll go by there tomorrow AM and PM & then report.
