There has been a nice entrance of Greater Flamingo's into Florida Bay this winter. The birds arrived at least a month ago and have been sticking to the same vicinities since their arrival. There are at least 20 birds right now on the northern fringes of Florida Bay from Cape Sable east to as far as Little Madeira Bay. They are in mixed flocks from 2-7 birds. This is more birds than have been in Florida Bay during the winter in at least 6 years. About half the birds are showing an interesting plumage of very pale/mottled brown, indicative of possibly immature birds. Specific locations where they have been present are the Southern Lakes region south of Lake Ingraham on Cape Sable, NE side of Calusa Key, Crocodile Dragover channel, the mud bank on the NW side of Eagle Key.
