Lots of sparrows have arrived at the C-357 Sparrow Fields at some point over the last week, as they were numerous (by voice) in the area. I observed both Savannah and Grasshopper Sparrows. I also flushed two larger sparrows which seemed to be bright rufous on the back and wings, which may have been one of the Melospiza sparrows (Lincoln's? Swamp?). Only seen briefly in flight, but interesting since Swamp Sparrow was not recorded as a wintering species last year at this location but was the year before. Since south Florida had a wet October this year, I am wondering if Swamp Sparrows will decide to winter at this location this season. We'll see.
Raptors were also numerous, with many Northern Harriers, American Kestrel, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, and a light morph Short-tailed Hawk patrolling the area.
The Scissor-tailed Flycatchers continue at the brushy area near the yellow gate entrance, usually perched on the various dead snags.
A flock of 22 Monk Parakeets seemed terribly out of place.
