This morning two White-crowned Sparrows were seen on campus along an open field which has a great shrubby edge. One Savannah Sparrow was also seen. Flocks of Tree Swallows made their way south, over 200 birds were counted. The Bell's Vireo was not relocated, sorry Jim. After a week of little raptor movement we were happy to see Peregrines, Short-tailed, Red-tailed, and Red-shouldered Hawks as they streamed by. Northern Harriers were flying overhead at high altitudes, mostly juvenile or female birds were seen. Painted and Indigo Buntings also were more noticeable today with many greenies buzzing in the shrubs.

While looking for raptors a flock of White Pelicans came into view, we watched them fly in the thermals for a while before disappearing. Another interesting observation was the large numbers of Green Darners in the thermals flying among the Vultures, Hawks and Falcons. These Darners are migratory and start to move south in late summer making it down here in masses by fall.

Nature is Awesome
