I birded near my home in West Kendall this morning. More warblers were present than the last few days, with obvious increases in Palms and Parulas. Black-and-whites were strangely absent. The warbler highlight was my FOS Blackpoll.
I was running out of morning birding time at this point, and decided to do a quick scan of the lake before quitting. I was surprised to see an American Avocet on the far side, and even more surprised when it flew in my direction. It landed next to a group of White Ibis. As I moved for a closer look, one of the local Cooper's Hawks darted for the Avocet. The Avocet calmly moved off the beach into the water. The Cooper's broke off and landed on the beach next to some Ibis. Oddly, the Ibis were unperturbed by all this. When I left the Cooper's was still standing on the beach, with the Avocet nearby in the water, paying little attention to the hawk.
