This morning Arthur Sissman and I birded the wetland on SW 248 street just across the canal from Mt.
Trashmore. Exit the turnpike at 112 Ave., go 1 block north and turn east onto 248 street. Go about 1 mile to Mt Trashmore. You can park near the construction site on the right and walk in, or follow Larry's directions on 12-3-01.

Notable birds seen among the thousands of gulls:

White pelican (30+)
red breasted merganser
b-w. teal (many)
g-w. teal
mottled duck (many)
ring-necked duck
bald eagle (2 adults)
avocet (2)
both yellowlegs
rough-winged swallow

From there we went to the Bell's vireo spot, and saw very little but dove hunters. I was impressed that the guys we talked to seemed to enjoy the raptors as they wait for doves, and even didn't mind sharing their downed doves with them. One hunter could even identify some of the other birds he saw. It will be interesting to see if the Swainson's hawks and kestrels make it through the season or finally become shotgun fodder.

One last stop at Fairchild produced no anis.
