Reflections on a great migration

Am I implying that it's over? That last big push we had was likely our last big push, of neotropical migrants that is. Although there are still more migrants yet to come, such as sparrows and waterfowl (that White-fronted Goose could be a precursor to something good?), and hopefully some rarities and vagrants in the mix, most of the birds that winter in parts south of us have passed through. But, they have left us who were lucky enough to experience this year's fall migration with memories that will last a lifetime, stories of "remember that year" to fill many lulls in future birding days, and a sense of having witnessed something special that the average human doesn't even know exist. However, I also hope that the vast majority of those little winged gems we so admire made it safely to their wintering grounds, and with millenia of stored instincts and some luck, will return north to repeat this natural phenomenom again.

I didn't bird today, but I'm having a really good libation anyway. The Mikkeller Black I'm having right now, ABV 17.5% and $17.99 per bottle, is not so much to celebrate one single bird or day, but rather this one goes to all the migratory birds that enriched our birding experience this year. So, to the Kirtland's Warbler, Golden-winged Warblers, Yellow-green Vireo, hoard's of Bay-breasteds, Philly Vireos, and too many others to list, I say God speed, and thank you. This one's for you.

Cheers!

PS: Hope you enjoyed your stay. Don't forget to tell your friends.
