Lucky Hammock was relatively quiet today, with few neotropical migrants and wintering species. Highlights included a Yellow-throated Vireo (on a wire!), 1st year Baltimore Oriole, and a confiding Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Other migrants and wintering species included Eastern Phoebe, Painted Bunting, Indigo Bunting, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and American Redstart. I did not see or hear any sparrows at either Lucky Hammock or the Annex (which was even more quiet). Perhaps they shall arrive in numbers at the end of next week with the arrival of another powerful front.
However, the show today really belonged to those birds that soar. Although most kettles were composed mostly of Black and Turkey Vultures, there were many other species joining them today:
Wood Stork -- 3
Anhinga -- 1
Osprey -- 1
Northern Harrier -- 4
Sharp-shinned Hawk -- 1
Red-shouldered Hawk -- 2
Short-tailed Hawk -- 5 (2 dark, 3 light morph)
Swainson's Hawk -- ~10 (all intermediate/light morph that I saw)
...plus a flurry of Barn Swallows (4) heading northeast
Several American Kestrels (5) on my way out of the Lucky Hammock area, plus a Cooper's Hawk and a Peregrine Falcon seen along Krome Ave, made it a pretty good day for raptors over all.
