This Sunday, October 23rd, from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM, the Land Stewardship Committee (LSC) of Mary Help of Christians Parish is offering Coffee, Creatures and Creation. at the Parish Grounds known on this board as Hoechoka Hammock. A nature ramble will feature a display of Hawks, and Falcons from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary of West Palm Beach. All of the birds of prey of South Florida including red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawk, Cooper s hawk, kestrel, eagle, and others will be on display. This static display will present a view of these beautiful creatures suitable for close study and photographing. There is no cost the program is offered to bring to the attention of the parish community that church can be an important part of environmental concerns. The LSC has spent 18 years taking a rocky barren 24 acres and converting it into a habitat that supports a large and diverse population of flora and fauna. A petting zoo is available for small children, the Hammock is available for bird watchers, the static display of hawks and falcons is available for drawing and photography, members of the LSC will be available to talk about some of the novel ideas they are experimenting with such as frond farming and the manufacture of a unique orchid potting media that uses chipped stalks of the cabbage palm. Over 131 species of native vegetation are on site and the wax myrtle, marlberry, lancewood, fiddlewood and gumbo limbo are all in full berry. A flourishing Turkey Oak and Lycaria Triandra (both memorials) give evidence that native vegetation can be part of a landscape plan. In fact the grounds are about 95% native vegetation. The LSC welcomes the TAS members and looks forward to your comments, suggestions and ideas. At the risk of being redundant, there is no cost: so on this cool Sunday take a stroll through our Hammock and grounds and see what is offered, have a cup of coffee, do some birding, and meet some like-minded birders.
