I finally found some Tufted Titmice inside of Dade County this morning. They were along Tamiami Trail, at the 3rd pullout inside of Big Cypress. This is the same area Bill Boeringer and I found Hairy Woodpecker last spring.

Curiously enough, I also found a Hairy Woodpecker today. It was on Turner River Rd., about 1/4 mile N of Tamiami Trail. I might have dismissed it as one of a pair of chasing Red-bellies had I not been familiar with one of its interaction calls. So far as I know, this particular call is not on any tape. I got a good look at the bird, which was a male, and it later gave the typical sharp "peek" call. I had never birded Turner River Rd before, and was surprised to find quite a few birds.

Other surpise birds included a heard flyover American Pipit at the Big Cypress Bend boardwalk (Fakahatchee), as well as a calling Great Horned Owl (instead of the expected Barred Owl) at the same location.
