Palmetto Bay Village Center and Bill Sadowski

After hearing the word about Cape Florida, I couldn't wait to hit the hammock at the Palmetto Bay Village Center over lunch. Before I even got the chance a colleague brought me a bird that they had found near the outside windows. It was a female Blackburnian Warbler. Her eyes were closed, but she was breathing. I found her a snug, dry spot in the bushes on our balcony and hoped her head trauma was not too great. I checked on her throughout the day, and by evening she was moving around inside the bushes scolding me. Excellent! I hope she continues to recover. When I did eventually check on the hammock I only came up with very usual numbers of three warbler species. The only thing unusual were the many Gray Catbirds.

I checked again after work and it was the same, except I scared up a Summer Tanager.

I ventured on to Bill Sadowski, a half mile away and it was extremely birdy in comparison. I could see birds before I even parked. Every picnic table had a bird on it...always a good sign. Diversity was not high overall, but American Redstart (~25) were present in impressive numbers, followed by Black-throated Blue (12), and Palm Warbler. Again lots of Gray Catbirds, and 10 Chimney Swift overhead.

It was tough to see Cape Florida from my window most of the day and to know that I couldn't make it over there to see the birds. Maybe another day!
