18 birders joined me, as first time leader, at the start of the TAS walk at Miami-Dade College Environmental Center. Jake Tucker was again nice enough to allow us access to this nature area and many thanks to him. The number of birders dwindled at Indian Hammocks but interesting birds were added there to today's total count of 42 species, including 14 species of warblers, seen by some or all present. Weather was nice and not an obstacle. Nor were mosquitos.
We had 10 warbler species at the Environmental Center:
Tennessee Warbler
N. Parula
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Pine Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
American Redstart
Common Yellowthroat
Ovenbird
Other highlights seen there were Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Swainson's Thrush, Brown Thrasher and good views of several Spot-breasted Orioles.
At Indian Hammocks, warbler-wise, we added:
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Magnolia Warbler (seen by Toe)
Black-and-white Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler (seen by Toe and later by me in the main hammock)
Other highlights at Indian Hammocks:
Cooper's Hawk (soaring with Black Vultures)
Broad-winged Hawk (good views of a textbook specimen)
White-crowned Pigeon
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Loggerhead Shrike
Red-eyed Vireo
Yellow-throated Vireo
BG Gnatcatcher
Swainson's Thrush
Veery (seen by me in the main hammock after the walk)
Brown Thrasher
N. Parula
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
American Redstart
Ovenbird
Painted Bunting
Many thanks to all who joined me for this walk. We have some great and enthusiastic birders in South Florida.
Stephen
